    1. I came up with LEGO folks many years ago, and I also came up with their name signs. I usually start with their descriptive name signs(RED-HAIR, BEARD, BLOND, MOUSTACHE and BROWN-HAIR) and then introduce their name signs which are arbitrary.

    2. I am sorry to be corrective but you spelled mustache wrong.

    3. Moustache and mustache are the same according to the dictionary. I might be old-fashioned because I prefer the word moustache.

  2. From what I was told, from a friend only a deaf person or people give out sign names to someone.

    1. I would suggest that you read Samuel Suppala's book, The Book of Name Signs: Naming in American Sign Language. I think the college library has a copy of it.

  3. I had some confusion about how names were assigned. These last two comments really cleared it up for me. Thanks Anna and Kimberly!

  4. I noticed in our textbook on the first page there is a list, with pictures, of people. It gives their names and each figure is doing a sign. It took me a little while to figure out what they were signing, but since I read this post...I think it'd be safe to assume they might all be signing their names!

Professor Schroeder, will we be coming up with signs for our names in class? Or will we stick with signing our names alphabetically?

  5. Bri'Ann,

Until I am 100% sure you've mastered the manual alphabet. Fingerspelling is very challenging, both doing and reading it. I will eventually give everyone a name sign that has to be earned!

  6. How do you create a name sign? Do you use the first letter of their name and use the motion that would describe them?

    1. No, I do not use the motion to describe. If you have curly hair, I would use the handshape C in the circular motion by the head to describe you. Name signs are arbitrary.

  7. I still don't quite understand how people get names. Hopefully someone can explain this to me. Or we go over it in class.

  8. I went to CCC to get the book but the library was closed so I went to the Oregon City library, and they didn't have it either. They said I could get it from PCC or downtown Vancouver. Do I need to order it from amazon and read it? Will the reference books for this class be easy to find to read?

    1. I have found all of the reference books on-line and at reasonable prices. This seems to be the best site I have found if you are interested, http://www.alibris.com

  9. I would describe Deb as having pink hair. Mike has red facial hair and is wearing a hat. Greg has grey hair and is wearing glasses. Bob has black hair and a mustache. Nancy has brown wavy (or curly) hair.

  10. I was assigned a handsign for my name by a deaf friend of mine a couple years ago. As for the lego people hmm thats hard deb looks like a mom with ink or re hair, Mike looks like a hardworker, greg looks like a smart older man, Bob looks rich and Nancy looks comfortably dressed. I dont know what their name signs are since i have not been shown yet.
