How To Write Reaction/Response Index Cards

Reaction/response index cards are usually requested by instructors so that you will consider carefully what you think or feel about something you have done or learned in the class.  The following guidelines are intended to be used for reacting to a class activity although they could easily be used for reactions to videos, too.  Do whatever you have been asked to do, and while doing, think about the following questions.

·         How do you feel about what you are doing in the class?

·         What do you understand or misunderstand?

·         Can you identify with the acquisition of American Sign Language?

·         What would be the best way to evaluate the learning activity?

Your reaction/response index card should include a concise, two or three sentences, focused “thesis” which is the statement of your thought.  A good reaction/response can be a prediction of the effects of what you are learning in the class.

  1. Does this mean we have been doing the reaction cards incorrectly?

    1. No, I just wish to expand your skills in doing the reaction cards by adding indepth and meaningful thoughts. I just told our classroom assistant: "The students need to become more objective; they need to offer perspectives instead of telling me it was fun and I'm awesome."

  6. This does help me to better know what to write. However it is very hard for me to come up with something meaningful in a matter of 2 or 3 minutes. I have a learning disability that makes it very hard for me to output my thoughts. So while I may know in my head what I want to say, putting it on paper isn't all that easy. But I will do my best.

  10. I really like the idea of the index cards because then we can talk about how we think we are doing in the class, and talk about our struggles and see that we are not the only one in the class struggling.
